I confess I enjoy stirring cinematic battle speeches. Braveheart's stirring (yet cheesy) freedom. Russell Crowe's 'unleash hell' in Gladiator. And one of my favourite scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the Theoden's pre-battle speech and the charge of the Rohirrim. But I can't help thinking of the poor suckers towards the back of the army, struggling to catch a few words of the speech that motivates them to charge into a deadly battle.
