We learn a little more about the Ionans in this ep - they're a negatively charged species (due to the excessive Beta radiation from their sun). Within their solar system are the expansive "Alco clouds" - a gaseous blob of ethyl alcohol (no kidding, these actually exist in space - as soon as I heard of them, I knew exactly how to use them in this story). Lastly, in response to an email I received, no, the "dark side engines" aren't technobabble - they're simply engines on the side of Synthiona facing away from the sun. Hence, dark side.
